The 30-year-old Danish right back of SC Magdeburg, Mads Christiansen, retires as Danish national player after 117 caps.
Mads Christiansen is listed for 117 caps and 257 goals since his debut in 2007, but now the right back has announced the Icelandic head coach of Denmark, Gudmundur Gudmundsson, that he no longer is available for the national team.
"I've had really good experiences in the national team, and I have always been very happy and proud to play in the national team. When you are away with the national team, we must also give up other things, and my family and especially my oldest child was affected by the fact that I have been much away, so I feel right now, that it is the right decision to stop. It's been a crazy hard decision to make, because I would like to be in both places, but that's not how the story holds together.," says the experienced right back in a press release.
The national head coach of Denmark, Gudmundur Gudmundsson, respects the decision
"Mads Christiansen has for a long time been a key player on the Danish national team, where he has had an important role, so it's obviously a shame, but he has made a decision, and I respect it, of course," says the coach Gudmundur Gudmundsson, that later today take out players for both the A-national team and development squad.
Mads Christiansen has won World Championship silver in Sweden in 2011, European Championship gold in Serbia in 2012, European Championship silver on home soil in 2014 and last Olympic gold in Rio in 2016 with the Danish national team.
Mads Christiansen is with his 117 caps the Danish player with 48th most caps.
